Mondrian AI Wins Navy AI Logbook Automation Project, Advancing a Smarter Navy

- Selected for the government-led Defense AI Commercialization Program -
- Developing core AI engines for closed naval networks -
- 60%+ less logbook work, saving 130,000 hours annually -
Mondrian AI, an AI technology company led by CEO Dae-ui Hong, has been selected to develop an automated service for generating naval vessel operations and engineering logbooks as part of the Rapid Commercialization Program for Defense AI Applications led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of National Defense. Naviworks will lead the project, overseeing overall system design and the development of an integrated platform for closed networks, while Korea Maritime & Ocean University will participate as a joint research institution. Mondrian AI will be responsible for developing the project's core technologies.
Until now, crew members aboard naval vessels have manually maintained around 30 types of logbooks. However, with the introduction of reduced-manning vessels, crew sizes have fallen to 60–70% of previous levels, increasing the burden on fewer personnel who must handle the same administrative workload. To address this challenge, Mondrian AI will build an edge AI system designed to operate reliably within the vessels' closed-network environments, where all external communications are blocked.
Once the service is fully deployed, the time required to prepare logbooks is expected to decrease by more than 60% compared with manual processes. This translates to approximately 1,971 administrative hours saved per vessel each year. If expanded across the entire Navy fleet, the system is expected to save approximately 130,000 work hours annually. By reducing administrative workloads, naval personnel will be able to focus more on their primary responsibilities, including training and combat readiness.
Dae-ui Hong, CEO of Mondrian AI, said, “As the defense environment continues to change, we are pleased to lead the development of core AI technologies that can reduce the administrative burden on naval crews and help them focus on their primary missions. We will bring together our capabilities in domain-specific AI model development and platform technology to build an automated logbook system that operates reliably even in defense environments where external communications are unavailable.”
The project goes beyond improving administrative efficiency and is expected to mark an important step toward building a smarter Navy. More broadly, defense innovation powered by advanced AI technologies is expected to fundamentally improve the working environment for military personnel and strengthen the competitiveness of the Navy of the future.
